In Tasmania, going without hot water due to a burst pipe in winter is almost impossible, and at the very least it’s quite uncomfortable. However, there are some things you can do to prevent having to call a plumber out of hours like keeping drains unblocked, repairing leaking taps, and identifying broken pipes and fixing them in a timely manner.
If you have flooding inside your home due to failed plumbing and fixtures it is wise to get immediate help. Mould only takes 24-48 hours to colonize, and furniture and flooring can be damaged further if left in a wet environment. Getting timely help can save on unnecessary headaches and extra expenses.
A good indication that you have a leak or pipe blockage is a drastic reduction in your water pressure. It is best to get this looked into as soon as you can to prevent possible flooding. If you find a burst pipe the first thing to do if you can is turn off the mains water supply. If this is too difficult then the next best thing is to open all the cold water taps to take pressure off the leaking pipe. Don’t put the plugs in and don’t use the hot water. Turn off any electrical appliances that may be in the way. See if you can control the escaping water to prevent damage and call a plumbing professional immediately.
No matter what your plumbing need, it is good to know how to turn off the water supply to your home yourself. Many home owners should understand at least the essentials. Whether you need to stop a leak or a tap that won’t turn off, turning off the mains water is the essential first step and it may need to be done before we arrive.
Generally you will discover the main water supply to a home in a plastic pit with a plastic cover at the entrance to your property. Lift the plastic cover and simply turn off the tap. If you don’t know where your major water shut off valve lies, call us for help.
If you have a leaking hot water cylinder it’s best to turn it off immediately and call for help. The cold water supply to your heater should have a valve directly above the heater. This needs to be shut off. If you cannot shut this off then turning off the mains water is the next best step.
If your leaky cylinder is not draining into a drain you’ll need to connect a hose to the drainage valve so the water can drain out to a sink, bathtub or outside.
For gas hot water cylinders turn the red shutoff valve 90 degrees to stop the gas supply to the cylinder. The red shut off valve should be next to the temperature dial.
For electric hot water heaters it is wise to turn off the power at your circuit breaker panel.
One of the most common plumbing emergencies is a toilet that is blocked and/or overflowing. If it looks like the toilet is going to overflow it’s best to turn off the water supply to your toilet. The shut off tap for the toilet is usually located directly behind the toilet.
If you don’t want to plunge the toilet yourself then we are only a phone call away and can make it a fast and simple fix for you.
